Textiles, human rights activism, and art as resistance: An exhibit of Chilean arpilleras

This site documents research conducted by Geography of Latin America students about Augustana College's collection of Chilean arpilleras, and accompanies the exhibit in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies lounge in Old Main 311. Arpilleras are patchwork tapestries created by women to chronicle their lives during the authoritarian dictatorship of General Augosto Pinochet from 1973-1990. In this digital exhibit, you will find student analyses of the arpilleras as well as links to interactive student research projects on the historical and geographical context of the arpilleras, art as resistance, human rights activism, and gender relations in Chile and Latin America.
