The Global Impacts of Chilean Arpilleras
On September 11, 1973, a military coup led by Augusto Pinochet and supported by the US CIA overthrew the democratically elected Chilean president, Salvador Allende. Pinochet's dictatorship lasted 17 years, and consisted of tortures, murders, and "disappearances" of Allende supporters, specifically left-leaning men. Resistance against ignorance was a common theme throughout the Pinochet regime in Chile. This story map demonstrates how arpilleras, a textile art form handmade by Chilean women, were and still are used to inspire other nations and make it impossible for the outside world to deny the horrors of the dictatorship (Beattie et al. 2). The story map will dive into detail about human rights groups that supported Chilean arpilleristas, popular arpillera museum exhibits, and the societal impact of the textiles.
